Afternoon Hike in El Puertito de Adeje

Afternoon Hike in El Puertito de Adeje

The beach in El Puertito de Adeje (a.k.a. El Puertito de Armeñime) is one of the cutest corners of Tenerife. It’s a small cove with a few pretty white houses, a church, and a restaurant with a bar.

Along the way you can notice that the place is popular among illegal campers (squatters) who have put up their tents, campers, and little huts made of cardboard, plastic, and any other material on hand. Can’t really blame them for choosing such a picturesque neighborhood.

Perfect for snorkeling and hiking

It’s a unique natural enclave in which green turtles swim freely, making it an ideal place for diving and snorkeling. According to some sources the turtle colony has practically disappeared due to tourist pressure, the presence of pleasure boats, and illegal fishing. Due to its proximity to mass tourism and bigger marinas, you can see vessels arriving in the cove every few minutes.

We arrived at the local bar, Chiringuito El Puertito, a few minutes before closing time and didn’t get a chance to sample the food. The focus of the menu was of course on seafood, but there were also plenty of options in other food categories, and some nice desserts. We’ll be back.

On the beach it doesn't hurt to know the tides of the day since when it’s high tide the sand can disappear almost completely, or alternatively the waterfront can be rocky, and it’s difficult to get into the water.

For those interested in hiking there’s a trail towards Diego Hernández beach, about 800 meters away.

According to the local newspaper there is a plan to develop the area into a luxury hotel. At the same time, geologists want to preserve it for scientific purposes to study the volcanic rock formations in order to better understand and protect the island. Whatever scenario unfolds in the future, right now is the best time to experience the magic of this village.
